I would like to recommend “It’s All in Your Head” by Maria McCutchen. Excerpt can be read and book ordered from Amazon.com. This is a true medical story by a courageous woman who writes from the heart to encourage others undergoing medical nightmares.

I just finished reading OF FLESH & BLOOD, by Daniel Kalla. This is another medically based story covering a century of love, loss and healing between two families brought together by the establishment of a renowned hospital and medical center. As in all families there was a great interest in maintaining the prestige of the operation as well as a few who did not feel bound by a familial interest. The conflict and personal stories of the characters kept this reader’s attention to the end. As in real life, circumstances altered loyalties and personalities of the main players. I recommend it to anyone interested in this type of family intrigue.
I also found RUSSIAN WINTER by Daphne Kalotay an interesting read in spite of being quite wordy. A mysterious jewel holds a life-changing secret in this tale of love and art (ballet), betrayal and the ever important redemption.

I’m starting a new post category for books I recommend. This will include only books that have made an impression on me as a reader and books that I believe will help others in some fashion. Choosing a book to read is a very personal matter. Some choose romance novels, others poetry. Still others prefer to read crime fiction and others political non-fiction. That’s what makes books so popular; there is something for everyone.
CLOSE TO MY HEART is a children’s book written by Susan Foley, M.D., a pediatrician whom I know personally, and her daughter Regen, both of whom know what it’s like to grieve a loved one. The book is a beautifully illustrated workbook for children who often feel alone and unable to cope after losing a parent or other loved one - even a precious pet. The authors hope the book will help not only the grieving child but the parent or caregiver in dealing with the most painful experience one can have. This workbook gently guides children through the grieving process with colorful illustrations and simple exercises to help the child express and understand their feelings.
If you know someone who is faced with this difficult challenge, please tell them about CLOSE TO MY HEART, or buy a copy for them as a gift. Available on Amazon.com, or you can order a copy from the author by e-mail: totdr@comcast.net.
